2142: The People of the State of New York v. John Langin

James P. Brady, a police officer, testifies that he saw the defendant, John Langin, 60, receiving money from several other men and making notations on a card while seated at a table in a liquor saloon on 42nd Street. Brady says he approached Langin and asked him to take a bet on Water Lily to win in the third race at Belmont Park. He claims that he gave Langin one dollar, arrested him, and confiscated two racing sheets. The defendant testifies that he did nothing wrong. Brady came to him, mentioned Water Lily, handed him a dollar, and immediately arrested him. Two witnesses testify to the good character of the defendant. Several pages are missing from the transcript and there is no record of a jury verdict.
