James Purcell is indicted for second-degree manslaughter. Purcell is accused of killing Michael O’Brien during a fight in Mulry’s Saloon, at the corner of 12th Street and Washington Street, on June 20, 1893. Witnesses testify that Purcell kicked O’Brien as he lay on the floor. The coroner’s physician, Frank J. O’Hare, testifies that O’Brien’s neck was broken and that the cause of death was shock from hemorrhage. Purcell testifies in his own defense that he did not kick O’Brien. There is no record of a verdict.
